You angel you/Born in captivity

 

Nel 1977 Ringo Starr collabora con il gruppo "The Alpha Band" suonando la batteria in due canzoni:  "Born in captivity" scritta da Arthur Buster Stahr e "You angel you" di Bob Dylan.

Entrambe le tracce finiranno nel disco della band americana intitolato "Spark in the dark", band che è formata da T-Bone Burnett, Steven Soles e David Mansfield più una serie di turnisti che negli anni collaboreranno ai vari progetti del gruppo. Burnett vanta collaborazioni con Costello e Roy Orbison. La band è stata attiva tra il 1976 e il 1979.

La connessione tra Ringo Starr è questo gruppo nasce nel gennaio del 1976 quando suonarono insieme a Bob Dylan durante il "Rolling Thunder Revue Tour".

"You angel you" venne scritta da Dylan nel 1973 per l'album "Planet Waves". Ecco la versione della Alpha Band con Ringo alla batteria:

La versione degli Alpha Band è più tendente al pop e la batteria di Ringo conferisce al pezzo un andatura galoppante e festosa, Dylan invece sceeglie una interpretazione più country.

Bisognerà attendere fino al 1990 per assistere ad una performance dal vivo della canzone da parte di Dylan, per la precisione l'otto febbraio all'Hammersmith Odeon di Londra:

Chiudiamo con due chicche, una prova della canzone eseguita da Dylan nel 1976 durante le prove del tour "Rolling Thunder Revue" e una cover del pezzo eseguita dalla Manfred Mann's Earth Band:

Ringo durante una trasmissione televisiva della Cbs ha rivelato qual è la sua canzone preferita di Dylan: "When the Deal Goes Down", con questa motivazione: "E' una bellissima canzone d'amore, molto romantica, mi commuovo ascoltandola".
